WOULD A BRIDGE REACH AN ISLAND,
AN ISLAND NO LONGER

for two pianos
(human player and automated piano)

[2025] // duration: ~ 8′

The core of this work is the interaction between the human performer and the robot player, and vice versa. The sound of Piano 1 is captured by the microphone(s) and sent to the Max/MSP patch. The computer can process this input and, depending on the different parts of the piece, generate a response played by the robot and/or create a new piano score displayed on the tablet. This automatically generated score is likely to be unplayable by a human performer. It will serve only as a sketch of various materials upon which the performer must freely develop an improvisation.
